The traditional shape
Coffins are tapered at the head and foot, wider at the shoulders, and are generally made with six or eight sides.
Historically hand-crafted from wood, coffins are now available in materials including timber, plantation pine, cardboard and other eco-friendly options.
A rectangular form
Caskets are rectangular, with four sides, a horizontally opening lid and a uniform width and depth.
They are commonly made from solid timber or metals such as steel and aluminium, with a range of finishes, linings, handles, trim and embellishments available.
